Social stratification began as people shared a common social standing and as societies evolved and became complex, they began to elevate some members.

Social stratification is a system by which society ranks its members in a hierarchy. Structural-functionalism simply focuses on equilibrium and solidarity while conflict-theory focuses on change and conflict.

According to Tumin, social stratification is ancient, universal, exists in diverse forms, and is consequential.
