A Three-Point Turn

Chapter 1

"You know, hardly anyone ever needs to do a three-point turn anymore," said Justin, trying to help Becky calm down.

"Oh, so it's not a useful skill AND I am probably going to fail the driving test because I can't do it anyway," Becky said, raising her voice for emphasis. "That should make me feel like a million bucks when I flunk."

Justin was riding with Becky so she could take her driving test. He had volunteered for the job because he thought she would be less nervous with him than with their mom, but so far, he wasn't sure he was making any difference.

"Slow down, your turn is coming up here," he said, looking ahead.

"I know, I know," she replied, "I've been here before remember—the last time I flunked."

Justin was pretty sure if he had let her miss the turn, things would only have deteriorated further, but he wasn't sure he was fond of being the scapegoat for Becky's anxiety.

"Listen, you need to take a few deep breaths," he said, hoping he could help her at least relax a bit. "Being nervous won't help you with the three-point turn or anything else you have to do. Hey, did you just take that turn without your turn signal on?" This was going to be harder than he thought.

"Stop yelling at me," Becky replied, clearly frustrated, "I can't concentrate."

"Look, you need to stop and get yourself together here," Justin started. "It is not just about passing the driving test. I don't want to get in an accident, so pull into that parking lot."

Becky drove into the office building's parking lot where Justin was pointing. Justin knew they were less than a mile from the licensing office, and if she continued in this condition, he'd be having this same discussion three months from now when she tried the test again for the third time.

"You need to get a grip," he started after she put the car in park, "because you have studied and practiced driving all year. You know this stuff inside and out, backwards and forwards. What are you so nervous about?"

"I don't know, I don't know," Becky wailed, resting her head on the steering wheel. "I just get so tired of failing."

Listening quietly as Becky sobbed, Justin realized this was about much more than a driving test. He also knew if he didn't find a way to help Becky things would just get worse.

Chapter 2

Justin took a deep breath and collected his thoughts. Becky was an unbelievably consistent straight-A student. It was Justin who got the bad grades in school, and Justin who had to repeat every math class he'd ever taken. It was Justin who wished he could get the grades Becky got. Some things came easier for Justin: He was athletic, handy with tools, and good at making the best of whatever life threw at him. Mom called him her "lemons into lemonade" kid. But for the most part, Becky succeeded easily, whereas Justin had to work and work to just get a passing grade.

Rather than having Becky catalogue all the things she supposedly "failed" at, Justin decided to try an alternative approach, one that wouldn't remind him of all the ways he had failed.

"Okay, Becky, let's assume for a moment you fail this test again. What is the worst thing that could happen?" he asked.

"I would be the oldest kid at school without a license and be humiliated," she replied. Justin thought he heard a bit of panic in her voice but continued with his plan.

"Yes, but won't we still have to drive to school together for at least one more year anyway?" he asked.

"Yes, but..." she started.

"And who will know, if you don't tell anyone except your friends, that you don't have your license? You know Mom can't afford another car just for you, right?"

"Yes," she said quietly.

"So what difference does it make, really," he said. "Another three months to wait in the grand scheme of your life doesn't seem like all that long, right?"

"I suppose not," she said.

Justin could tell she was breathing more slowly now. "Besides," he said, "I would miss all the practice driving with you," and for good measure he reached over and pinched her arm.

"Ow," she said, hitting back at him, "that hurt."

"So let's go do this, okay?

"Okay," she said. Becky cranked up the car, backed slowly out of the parking spot and drove up to the parking lot's exit. Justin noticed, as they waited for the traffic to clear, that she had remembered the turn signal.

Answers

Answer:

1. Ad hominem- Our current mayor has been in politics for over 25 years. It is time that we have a younger mayor, so we can have fresh ideas to make our city better.

2. False Analogy- Driving to work instead of using public transportation is like not eating everything on your plate. It wastes valuable resources.

3. False Dilemma-  Increasing our city's debt to improve our roads is better than letting all our cars be destroyed because of all the potholes.

4. Red Herring- It is true that the city council did approve a tax for a new road construction project. However, our city needs to attract more businesses to stabilize our economy.

Explanation:

Ad hominem is a form of fallacy where the person is attacked instead of the argument he presents. In the above example, the current mayor is presented as not having fresh ideas and this deviates from the argument of him being in office for over 25 years.

False Analogy identifies similarities between two concepts that are used to draw further conclusions. Similarities are drawn between driving to work and not eating everything on a plate.

A False dilemma occurs only when two choices are presented when there are other options to choose from. Apart from increasing the city's debt, there could have been other ways to prevent the roads from being destroyed by potholes.

Red herring is a topic that distracts from the main subject being discussed. The subject which is the approval of a road construction project was distracted from.

Too Fast

Batnik’s father was a great inventor. He had created many things that made people’s lives easier. One of his inventions was a car that could operate on both water and land; this car was Batnik’s favorite. On water, it could float and travel at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. But on land, it could travel at speeds over 200 miles per hour. Batnik’s father had created this special car to help people from their island get to the mainland and other islands faster. When Batnik's father was a boy, the only method of travel from one island to another was by ferry, and the trip often took hours. People who were sick and needed medical help from the mainland would have to endure the long crossing or not go at all because of delays. Batnik’s father loved his homeland and wanted to ease the burden on the people, so he created the water car.

When he showed the car to Batnik, Batnik’s father warned Batnik that the car should not be driven at the maximum speed on land or water because the engine could burst into flame. One day when his father was away, Batnik decided that he wanted to show the car to his friends. He drove it on the water, at first going only half the possible speed. Then, as his excitement grew, he increased his speed on the water and was nearing maximum speed. When he reached the land, he continued to accelerate. His exhilaration grew. Like the mythological Greek boy Icarus, who flew too close to the sun, Batnik forgot his father’s warning and pushed the gas pedal to the floor. When the car exceeded 200 miles per hour, it burst into flames.
How is the character of Batnik's father in “Too Fast” similar to Pan in "Pan: God of the Wild"?

Imagine Alice has returned from her journey down the rabbit hole and is retelling the events to her sister. Write a story from Alice's point of view, in which Alice explains what happened to her after she reached the bottom of the rabbit hole

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

After falling into the rabbit hole I've been going down for so long, so long I can't even tell how many hours it lasted. I wasn't afraid of the fall, but I was very bored because I never got to the end of that fall. When I finally reached the bottom, I found myself in a very weird location. It was a hall with doors, but they were all locked. I found the situation very strange, but I wasn't afraid. I was curious.

There was a table in the middle of the room and on top of it was a key and a bottle. On the bottle it said "drink me" so I drank it. This made me shrink in size quickly. I got tiny and couldn't reach the top of the table to get the key that was there. That's when I saw a muffin on the floor, where there was a sign saying "eat me" so I ate it and started to grow. I was excited because I could get the key, but I started to grow too big. I became giant and couldn't reach the key again.

I felt so sad that I started crying violently. My tears were huge and flooded the entire hall. Can you believe? However, as I cried I started to shrink and I only realized this when I fell into the river that my tears formed. I started swimming and suddenly I was out of the room, even though I didn't open any doors.

Paul explains a mishap in the factory to his supervisor Shi Xian. John tells him exactly where the miscommunication occurred and who was at fault. Now, Paul is trying to understand why his boss seems more cold and distant and why less desirable assignments are coming his way. In this scenario, John may need to learn _____. A. to use a less indirect style of communication B. that honesty is not always the best policy in intercultural contexts C. how to slow down and sneak up on information D. to be more formal in his interactions

Answers

Answer:A

Explanation:

This might be wrong, as all of them could be correct, although I think A is the most reasonable to infer. The text uses "exactly" to describe his directness. A lot of people don't like this directness, and as a result, could become more cold or distant. Another thing contributing to my answer is that no other information about his interaction is given, making the other answers unreasonable. Again, think through this yourself, because I may not be right.

Answer:

A Passive Sentence starts with the subject acting on the noun.

An Active Sentence starts with the noun acting on the subject.

In the examples below, the company is the noun and the new workers are the subject. In the active sentence, it starts with the company—the noun—, the grammar tense—will be—, and finally the subject. But in the passive sentence, it starts with the new workers—the subject—, the grammar tense—will be—, and finally the noun.

Just as a quick tip, teachers prefer that you write with active sentences, just because it makes more sense.

Active Sentence

The company will be hiring new workers.

Passive Sentence

New workers will be hired by the company.

1) The room has been cleaned.
