Time to "Bee" Wary, by Gordon Winters

Africanized honey bees were created in Brazil in 1957. Scientists mixed local bees with African ones to create a bee that would make more honey. They ended up with something much different. The new bees evolved in unexpected ways. They multiplied and migrated north. These Africanized honeybees are now known as killer bees for several scary but legitimate reasons.

Killer bees are far more aggressive than their relatives. They have been known to attack in great numbers, even when there has been no direct threat on their hives. They have swarmed because of loud noises, dark clothing, bright jewelry, and even strong perfume. They will chase a person for more than a quarter of a mile and remain angered for up to 24 hours.

Killer bees are also dangerous because of their sting. While most bees take up to 30 seconds to attack, killer bees sting in just 3 seconds. Their venom is no stronger than a regular bee's, but when one killer bee stings, others follow. With up to 80,000 members in a colony, victims are quickly overwhelmed. So many stings in such a short time can cause allergic reactions. Victims enter a state of shock, lose blood pressure, and in many cases, die.

A final reason why "killer" has been added to their name is the unfortunate number of deaths they have caused. Experts estimate that the Africanized honeybee moves at a rate of about 200 miles each year. As the bees claim new territory, they claim new victims as well. More than 1000 people have been stung to death in South and Central America. There have been rising numbers of attacks in Mexico and a handful in the United States. Once a swarm sets sights on a victim, it is very difficult for the victim to escape. Once attacked, it is very difficult to survive.

Thankfully, there has been no killer bee invasion as some once predicted. Although there is no need for panic, the threat of the killer bee is real and should be taken seriously. It is good practice to call a professional to remove beehives in your area. If you are stung multiple times by any insect, you should always seek medical attention. You may not be expert enough to tell the difference between a killer bee and a less dangerous one, so be smart. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Which details relate to the main fact in the third paragraph?

A. Killer bees attack in great numbers. They swarm for many reasons. They chase people and stay angry for hours.
B. Killer bees have very aggressive behavior. Their stings are very dangerous. They have caused many deaths.
C. Killer bees sting in just three seconds. They sting in large numbers. They cause allergic reactions in their victims.
D. Killer bees have been the cause of deaths in South and Central America. They've caused deaths in Mexico and the U.S.

Read the excerpt from President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address. Which statement best describes the main message of the passage?

In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

Now the trumpet summons us again—not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need—not as a call to battle, though embattled we are—but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"—a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

A. War is the only way to solve the problems of the world.
B. People should work together to better their society.
C. Americans are incredibly loyal to their country.
D. The US government should help those in need.

Answers

Answer:

B. People should work together to better their society.

Explanation:

The main message of this excerpt from President JFK's inaugural address really comes from the lines "ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country...ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." He is simply showing that it is everyone's responsibility to make the country and the world better. He states that we fight not just war but also tyranny, poverty, and disease. All of these things need people to work together to make society, as a whole, better.

Everybody in the United States has heard the song about the star-spangled banner. Nearly everybody has sung it. It was written by Francis Scott Key.Key was a young lawyer. In the War of 1812 he fought with the American army. The British landed soldiers in Maryland. At Bladensburg they fought and beat the Americans. Key was in this battle on the American side. After the battle the British army took Washington, and burned the public buildings. Key had a friend who was taken prisoner by the British. He was on one of the British ships. Key went to the ships with a flag of truce. A flag of truce is a white flag. It is carried in war when one side sends a message to the other. When Key got to the British ships, they were sailing to Baltimore. They were going to try to take Baltimore. The British commander would not let Key go back. He was afraid that he would let the Americans know where the ships were going.Key was kept a kind of prisoner while the ships attacked Baltimore. The ships tried to take the city by firing at it from the water. The British army tried to take the city on the land side. The ships did their worst firing at night. They tried to take the little fort near the city.Key could see the battle. He watched the little fort. He was afraid that the men in it would give up. He was afraid that the fort would be broken down by the cannon balls. The British fired bomb-shells and rockets at the fort. When these burst, they made a light. By this light Key could see that the little fort was still standing. He could see the flag still waving over it. He tells this in his song in these words:"And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in airGave proof through the night that our flag was still there."But after many hours of fighting the British became discouraged. They found that they could not take the city. The ships almost ceased to fire.Key did not know whether the fort had been knocked down or not. He could not see whether the flag was still flying or not. He thought that the Americans might have given up. He felt what he wrote in the song:"Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?"When the break of day came, Key looked toward the fort. It was still standing. There was a flag flying over it. It grew lighter. He could see that it was the American flag. His feelings are told in two lines of the song:"Tis the star spangled banner, oh, long may it waveO'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave!"Key was full of joy.
