Where Do You Work? When Kids Had Adult Jobs

Imagine dragging yourself out of bed on a cold, dark morning before the sun has even risen. You dress quickly because you’re running late. But instead of a day filled with schoolwork, soccer practice, and a few chores around the house, you head over to the town’s mill where you will spend the next 10 to 12 hours. That’s what life was like for about 18 percent of American children ages 10 to 15 in the early twentieth century. Instead of going to school, they went to work.

Before the Industrial Revolution

From the early days of America until the late 1930s, there were few laws protecting children from work. In colonial times, children often worked alongside their parents. Girls worked with their mothers cooking, sewing, gardening, and milking cows. Boys worked on their fathers’ farms or in their shops. Boys from the ages of 10 to 14 often became apprentices. They worked under the care and direction of master craftsmen. In both farming and apprenticeships, children learned the skills of a job from beginning to end. Those in apprenticeships not only learned a trade from their masters, they were also taught basic arithmetic and how to read and write. Plus, they were given a place to live and a wage.

From Farms to Factories

By the time of the Civil War in the 1860s, however, the apprenticeship system had fallen by the wayside. The country was becoming more industrialized. Children worked to help support their families. Children were often hired to work in factories because factory owners found children easy to manage. They could be paid less than adults and were less likely to go on strike. An added benefit was their small size: children could easily move in tight spaces around machinery.

Factory workers, including children, generally learned one repetitive job. This made training fast and easy. Despite their age, children often worked in hazardous conditions. They worked in cotton mills in New England and in the South. The windows of the mills were kept shut to keep the cotton moist and warm so it wouldn’t break. Child workers would be covered in cotton lint that would fill their lungs. Towns grew around the mills. Families lived in houses owned by the mills. The mills provided a school. But the children usually didn’t have time to attend. A study done in the early twentieth century revealed that half the children under age 14 could not read or write.

In the early 1900s, children also worked in glass factories, canneries, cranberry bogs, and sugar beet fields. They went to work in the mines in Pennsylvania or West Virginia as a “breaker boy.” Breaker boys sat crouched over a coal chute. Their job was to pick out pieces of slate and rock as the coal rushed past them. The air was thick with coal dust, and many of the boys suffered from respiratory illnesses because of it. They earned 60 cents for a 10-hour shift of backbreaking work.

Champions for Change

Fortunately, some concerned citizens decided to stand up against child labor and to address the problems it created. In 1904, a group of reformers founded the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) to abolish child labor. This committee hired investigators to gather evidence for their cause. One person they hired was Lewis Wickes Hine. Hine was a former teacher and photographer. He took pictures of children wherever they worked.

From 1908 to 1912, Hine snapped pictures of children at work. He would hide his camera and trick factory bosses into letting him get inside. Hine wrote notes on a pad hidden inside his pocket. He wanted to accurately describe what he saw without being caught. His photographs showed children working in coal mines, sweatshops, and mills and on farms. When many of Hine’s photographs were published, the public was shocked. People were finally motivated to address the issue of child labor.

Soon many states passed laws protecting children in the workplace. But despite these laws, children still worked hard. The NCLC pushed for a federal law for child workers. In 1916 and 1918, laws were passed. But those laws were overturned by the Supreme Court as being unconstitutional. In 1924, Congress passed an amendment to the Constitution. But not enough states ratified it, so it didn’t become law. In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed. It set a national minimum wage and maximum hours to be worked in a day. More important, it set limitations on child labor.

Today, children are protected by child labor laws. The federal government has set the minimum working age at 14 for jobs other than babysitting or delivering newspapers. In some states the minimum working age may be higher. Children’s lives are much easier today than they were more than a century ago.

However, when carrying out secondary research like Lennox, there are certain rules to follow in selecting sources to cite. Citing wrong sources may cause your research to lose credibility.

Cite reliable sources: There are journals that publish peer-reviewed research articles. These are most likely to contain reliable sources of information, and as such, can be cited. There are scientific organizations that carry out very extensive research and development. Examples are: Institute of Health of various nations, the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, the Bureau of Statistics of various countries, the World Bank, etc are very reliable sources. UTube Videos, blogs, non-educational sources are not good sources to cite from. Some reliable sources such as those mentioned above may have videos on UTube. It is important to check the sources thoroughly.

   2. Cite Primary Sources

Primary sources are organizations that consistently carry out their own research. Goods examples are the World Bank, websites with .edu extension, etc. Websites like Wikipedia that collect information from non-primary and unreviewed sources are not good examples to cite from.

What has Maria been asked to do?

B.retell

Maria was asked to retell the story she read which would be done in her own choice of words.

Explanation:

Answer:

B. Washington was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754.

A. paraphrase

Explanation:

In this excerpt, the author discusses the early life and accomplishments of George Washington. We learn that Washington pursued interests that related well to his military career. We also learn that he was able to experience the French and Indian War, and was even at danger of dying in it. This experience would not have been possible without his being commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754. Therefore, this is the most relevant detail in this excerpt.

In this example, Maria has to explain the details and information that she read in an article. However, she is asked to do so in her own words. This is known as paraphrasing. When we paraphrase, we convey a particular idea by using our own words, as opposed to those of the author. This helps the reader show how well he understands the subject at hand.

Who is Rosa Parks?

Rosa Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honoured her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake's order to vacate a row of four seats in the "coloured" section in favour of a White passenger, once the "White" section was filled. Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation, but the NAACP believed that she was the best candidate for seeing through a court challenge after her arrest for civil disobedience in violating Alabama segregation laws. The case became bogged down in the state courts, but the federal Montgomery bus lawsuit Browder v. Gayle resulted in a November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional.

It was under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Some scientists gaze into outer space to look for answers. Some scientists seek answers in the depths of the sea. When Georg Steinhauser wanted answers, he looked within himself. Well, he looked within his bellybutton to be exact. The Austrian chemist spent three years researching the contents of his navel and the navels of others. He has solved one of life's greatest mysteries. We now know exactly what bellybutton lint contains!

Steinhauser presented his findings in the online version of the journal Medical Hypotheses. The Vienna University scientist analyzed over 500 samples to determine the exact makeup of the lint. As suspected, most of the lint was made up of cotton from clothing. The fabric pieces are not alone, though. Steinhauser found that the average bellybutton also contained pieces of dead skin, sweat, dust, and fat.

Steinhauser's notes also explained how lint accumulates. Stomach hairs tend to grow in a circular pattern around the bellybutton. The hairs act like small hooks, capturing and holding contents within. Shaving stomach hair can lead to a lint-free bellybutton, but don't act too hastily. Although the contents of your navel may be a nuisance, research suggests that lint has a purpose. It is nature's way of protecting your bellybutton from germs and unwanted objects. (20 points)

The Angry Lunchtime

"I really wish this place had a lunch buffet," Kevin said while he cleaned his glasses with the restaurant's cloth napkin. "That way, we wouldn't have to spend time waiting for the chefs to cook our food."
"I don't mind waiting," Alex said while he read a menu and scratched his beard.
Kevin put his glasses on and wondered when Alex was going to shave. "You don't mind waiting because you don't care about getting back to the office on time after lunch," he said with a laugh.
Still reading the menu, Alex shrugged his shoulders.
Kevin took a deep breath and began to read the menu. He thought about how his bank account was almost out of money. He had bought Alex's lunch three times in a row, and he hoped that Alex would not expect him to buy his lunch again. "It's your turn, by the way," Kevin said.
"It's my turn for what?"
"To buy lunch for both of us," Kevin said, hoping he did not sound angry.
"I can't," Alex said while he continued to scratch his beard. "Payday isn't until Friday."
Kevin sighed and removed his glasses. "Then why are we here?"
Alex finally stopped scratching his beard and made eye contact with Kevin. "I thought we were here because it is lunchtime; therefore, we will eat lunch."
"I mean, why are we going to eat lunch here if we can't afford it?" Kevin asked. "You take advantage of my generosity all the time!" he exclaimed.
"Are you two ready to order?" a waitress asked.
"Why don't you people have a lunch buffet like all the other restaurants?" Kevin asked harshly.
"OK, I'll come back later," the waitress said before she walked away.
Alex reached over the table and gently placed a hand on Kevin's shoulder. "Hey, man, you didn't have to explode like that," he said.
Kevin sighed and put his glasses back on. "You're right. I'm sorry I yelled at you. I'll apologize to her, too, after she comes back. Sometimes I get crazy when I'm hungry and broke."
Alex reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. "I have a couple of dollars and some change with me. I know of a burger place down the street that has a dollar menu. I would be happy to buy you lunch today," he said. Then he added with a grin, "I'm planning to shave my beard on payday, in case that was bothering you too."
Blushing, Kevin said, "Thanks, man."
