Cold and wet as a combination are both largely used clichés to set the scene of a story, similar to ‘To Build a Fire’, by Jack London, which did however have a more intense description of the setting which was successfully suspenseful and eerie. The pathetic fallacy at the very beginning conveys the idea that the story will contain dark or evil connotations.
