urgent ,,, What are the strengths and weaknesses of consequentialism generally?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Consequentialism can struggle to compare different moral values. The other concern people express is the tendency of consequentialism to use 'ends justify the means' logic. If all we are concerned with is getting good outcomes, this can seem to justify harming some people in order to benefit others

Explanation:

So a strength of consequentialism is that it provides a rational basis for determining whether an act is ethical within this framework; but a weakness is that it can result in injustices to individuals. The ends do not always justify the means.

The narrator is reliable because she admires her mother’s commitment to fighting for voting equality.

The narrator is reliable because her reaction to the news about the Nineteenth Amendment makes sense given her passion for equal voting rights.

The narrator is unreliable because she incorrectly implies that the voting age is 21.

The narrator is unreliable because she does not describe opposing perspectives, like the perspective of the anti-suffragists.

Answers

Answer:

The narrator is reliable because her reaction to the news about the Nineteenth Amendment makes sense given her passion for equal voting rights.

Explanation:

The sincerity in the narrator's description of events and emotions expressed shows that she is reliable. She found it hard to believe when the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified. She also expressed her amazement at that landmark result. These emotions are logical given that she was not happy with the injustice meted to women on voting. Now, she could look forward to participating in voting once she attains the legal age.

Ninety-eight IBM employees won't show up at the office this year. But they'll still get paid. It's called ``social service leave,'' a full, paid leave that some companies give employees to do civic projects for an extended time, in some cases as long as a year, with a guarantee of the same job or a comparable one afterward.

``Most nonprofit organizations don't function the way we do at IBM,'' says Doris Milles, who is bringing her business know-how to bear on a private nonprofit organization called Masspep (Massachusetts pre-engineering program).

A Boston-based IBM marketing support representative currently on leave, Ms. Milles aims to get very young minority students excited about careers in engineering.

``Speaking for myself, if you are a minority person, you know that a lot of things are out there but you don't know how to go about it,'' she says.

IBM is a giant player in a game played by corporations large and small that have learned they have something even more valuable than money to give to their communities: the time and talents of their employees.

1. Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture. Is torture a
reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis? What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham)
argue? What would Kant argue? What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also
include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

Answers

Answer:

- Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture.

Utilitarianism revolves around the concept of “the end justifies the means,” while deontology works on the concept “the end does not justify the means.” Utilitarianism is the principle that the correct form of action be taken to benefit the greatest number of people.  Deontology is defined as the area of ethics involving the responsibility, moral duty and commitment. Both utilitarianism and deontology deal with the ethics and consequences of one’s actions and behavior despite the outcome.

- Is torture a reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis?

Torture and abusive interrogation tactics are illegal under U.S. law, international law, and international human rights treaties. Torture is prohibited under federal law, as are lesser forms of detainee abuse such as cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is prohibited at all times and in all circumstances.

- What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham) argue? What would Kant argue?

A Utilitarianism such as Jeremy Bentham, he would argue that an action (or type of action) is right if it tends to promote happiness or pleasure and wrong if it tends to produce unhappiness or pain—not just for the performer of the action but also for everyone else affected by it. Kant would say that the only virtue that can be unqualifiedly good is a good will. Kant argues that a person is good or bad depending on the motivation of their actions and not on the goodness of the consequences of those actions.

- What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

I agree with Bentham's argument because, broadly speaking, Bentham would first consider the outcomes of both actions and evaluate how much pleasure or pain either action will cause, while Kant would consider the action of killing someone and evaluate if the action is morally “right” or “wrong. Bentham’s argument that protecting the welfare (happiness) of the greatest number of people, I suggest, will ultimately win out because we live in an era when governments and electorates subscribe to neoliberal economic ideologies. Bentham’s greatest happiness theory will enable the business, industry and education sectors to open-up for business as normal. Of course politics and self-protection will dictate how quickly normalcy is resumed, but the need to bring happiness to the maximum number of people will ultimately determine the strategy of government because elections are determined by the greater number of voters who feel happiest, not by the greater number of voters who are morally and ethically driven as Kant's theory suggests.

(a) Why did Bobby think winter was the best month of the year?

(b) Why did Bobby think summer was the best season?

(c) What did he say about autumn?

(d) What did he say about spring?

Story
It was a winter day. The sun was shining, and the sky was blue The first snow of the winter was sparkling on the ground; little Bobby was out in the yard making a snowman. Suddenly he heard his mother calling, "Bobby, come in and eat your lunch." A moment later Bobby appeared in the doorway. His cheeks were red, and he was covered with snow. He shook the snow off his clothes Then he came into the house, took off his boots, mittens and coat, and sat down to eat his lunch. "Winter is the best season of the year," Bobby said to his mothe "There's snow and you can make snowmen and throw snowballs. You can go ice skating, and you can slide on your sled. Then Christmas comes, and there are Christmas presents. I wish we had winter all the time." "Yes," replied Bobby's mother, "winter is a good time of the year." The days passed quickly, and soon it was spring. One Saturday morning in March, Bobby and his mother were driving their car to the supermarket, and Bobby said, "Spring is the best season of the year. The weather is warm, the trees get their leaves again, the grass turns green, and there are pretty flowers everywhere. The days get longer, and I can play outside more. I wish it were spring all the time." "Yes, spring is a good time of the year," said Bobby's mother, Before long it was summertime, and on a warm July day Bobby was sitting on the porch swing beside his mother. "Summer is the best season of the year," said Bobby. "I can go swimming. And I can play football. I don't have to put on heavy clothes he when I go outside, and I can run barefoot on the cool grass. I wish it an were summer all the time.""Yes, summer is a good season of the year," replied his mothe Soon autumn arrived, and one October day Bobby came from school and said to his mother, "Autumn is the best season of the year. The trees are all red and yellow and gold, and the days aren't hot any more. Then there are treats and jack-o'-lanterns on Halloween and turkey on thanksgiving. I wish it were fall all the time." "But, Bobby said his mother, "one time you said that winter was the best season another time you said spring was the best; and still another time you said summer was the best. Now you say that fall is the best season Which season do you really like best?" Bobby thought for a minute, and then he said, "Well, I guess like all four of them best."

a. prepares/ will decorate
b. will prepare/ decorates
c. prepare/ decorate
d. prepare/ will decorate

Answers

Answer:

d. prepare/ will decorate

Explanation:

To answer this question it is helpful to break it into two separate parts. First, figure out which form of to prepare should be used. Remember that verbs must match the number of subjects. In this case, the subjects are plural because it is both Caroline and Sue. This means that "prepare" must be used because it is the verb that fits a plural subject.

Then, you need to understand what conjugation of to decorate that is needed. The second part of the sentence is conditional because it is dependant on what happens in the first part. It is also future tense because it hasn't happened yet. Therefore, "will decorate" is correct because it is the future conditional conjugation of the infinitive.

This means that d is the final answer.
