Acting on instinct, Johnny & Ponyboy quickly climb into the burning church through a splintered window, not caring if their lives are on the line, but only thinking about the heartbroken parents that would have been brought with the terrible news.
Now in intensive care, Ponyboy recalls not even thinking about his own safety, but only about the safety of the kids. Johnny and Ponyboy lift the children carefully out of the window, their lungs getting charred with the spitting embers and smoke.
