Imperialism simply means expanding the empire of a country's by colonization, the use of force or coercion. The motives of imperialism include:
1. Exploration- Countries send out explorers to find new territories and also map out new trade routes wjhich will aid trading. This is a motive for imperialism.
2. Economic- Another motive for imperialism is economic expansion. For example, the American government wanted to get the western territories in order for them to increase agricultural production which would therefore make them more powerful in the global trade.
3. Political- Another reason for imperialism is for the expansion of a political power and also to gain control over a particular region.
The Americans justified imperialistic behavior by stating that due to the fact that they were the superior race, they should hence uplift other territories that were less superior. They refered to this as the White Mans Burden.
