Sportsmanship is the behavior and attitude exhibited by athletes that demonstrates respect for their opponents, officials, and the game itself.

What does Good sportsmanship involves?

Good sportsmanship involves following the rules, treating opponents with respect, showing humility in victory, and graciousness in defeat.

Here are some examples of good and bad sportsmanship in sports:

Two times you have seen a teammate be a bad sport.

First example: During a soccer game when I was 14, one of my teammates became angry after the opposing team scored a goal. He started arguing with the referee and refused to continue playing. His behavior disrupted the flow of the game and made it difficult for our team to regroup and continue playing.

Second example: During a basketball game when I was 16, one of my teammates intentionally fouled an opposing player out of frustration. He then argued with the referee, refused to leave the court, and had to be restrained by our coach. His behavior was unsportsmanlike and reflected poorly on our team.

Two times you have seen a teammate be a good sport.

First example: During a volleyball game when I was 15, one of my teammates noticed that an opposing player was having difficulty serving the ball. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, she offered some tips and encouragement to the player. Her behavior was gracious and demonstrated good sportsmanship.

Second example: During a baseball game when I was 17, one of my teammates hit a home run to win the game. Instead of celebrating and gloating, he ran the bases without showboating, and then shook hands with the opposing team. His behavior showed humility and respect for his opponents, and demonstrated good sportsmanship.
