In epistemology, philosophers refer to attitudes toward the universe that can either be true or wrong as "beliefs." To take something to be true, or to accept that something is real, is to believe it to be true. For example, accepting that snow is white is equivalent to believing it to be true. But active introspection is not necessary to hold a conviction. For instance, few people thoroughly ponder whether or not the sun will rise tomorrow; instead, they just assume it will. In addition, beliefs can be dispositional rather than occurring (e.g. a person who if asked about the colour of snow would assert "snow is white").
