This may occur due to hyperstimulation of the adrenal gland by adrenocorticotrophic hormone,either from the pituitary gland or from an ectopic source or due to largely autonomous secretion by an adrenal tumor such as an adenoma or carcinoma. The increased endogenous cortisol production leads to a disorder known as CUSHING'S SYNDROME. The clinical and metabolic features include obesity, hyperglycaemia and hypertension.

Also when the adrenal glands become UNDERPRODUCTIVE, a health condition known as ADDISON'S DISEASE may occur. This is cause any the bilateral destruction of all zones of the adrenal cortex, usually as the result of an autoimmune process or mycotic infections. The resulting decrease in cortisol production may lead to clinical features such as hypotension, hypoglycemia, nausea and vomiting.
